MONSTER SERIES 2: Vampire

Description

This is the second piece from my MONSTER series.
The object of this project was to re-imagine classical monsters from pop culture and mythology. I did it through my own aesthetical taste and references from previous incarnations of these creatures in other visual media. I have a lot of love for this monsters, each has a certain relevance in present and previous cultures, they are timeless. These monsters will always remain in movies, books, comics as the ultimate incarnation of our fears. They all were done with stylograph and later colored in photoshop.
Vampires have obsessed me since I was a little kid and read a watered down version of Bram Stoker's Dracula. I found them the epitome of darkness, they don't like darkness or are attracted to it, they ARE the darkness and can't scape that fate. My biggest inspirations for this was Love Song for a Vampire by Annie Lennox and Guillermo del Toro's Cronos. The line from that song "Now the floor of heaven is laid with stars of brightest gold" made me realize how these dark terrible creatures are at the same time almost saints for their infinite pain of living without love. The areola on top of its head makes him a fallen saint. I wanted it to look like a really really old being, androgynous and really mysterious, the gold details on its spider legs and victorian clothes give us the idea of a timeless and refined monster. The idea of the spider legs came from a friend and Paul Feval's The Vampire City a satire novel of Anne Radcliffe's life and the gothic novel in which the main vampire Otto Goetzi transforms into a spider hybrid.

I love Vampire City, I'm glad to see someone else on Deviant Art taking inspiration from it.
